Work Package 1 – Management of Bio-resources

Objectives

Provide the starting bio-resources for the whole project, issued from pre-existing collections and newly collected material from the specific expeditions to tropical mesophotic coral ecosystems and temperate mesophotic ecosytems.

Main activities

This Work Package comprises two main stages. First, project partners will provide marine invertebrates available in their collections for chemical investigations in WP2, forming the MACLIB library (MACroorganism LIBrary). Microbial symbionts (actinomycetes and fungi) associated with the MACLIB species will be isolated and cultivated to form the MICroorganism LIBrary (MICLIB).

The second stage is to gather together the newly collected marine invertebrates (including soft corals, sponges, tunicates, echinoderms and sea anemones) from eight expeditions to form a library of TARget MACroorganisms (TARMAC library). Two expeditions will be carried out in the Indian Ocean (between Ile de la Réunion and Madagascar), two to the Thailand coasts, two to the Red Sea and two to the Eastern Mediterranean. Microbial symbionts will then be isolated from the TARMAC species to build a library of TARget MICroorganisms (TARMIC library) for cultivation. The final step will be to isolate and cultivate microalgae from the TARMAC species.
