Work Package 4 – Cultivation improvements


The main objective is to develop lab-scale specific protocols, media and strategies for cultivating marine invertebrates and their symbionts, while respecting physico-chemical constraints of the mesophotic ecosystems both tropical (coral reefs) and temperate (Mediterranean).


Main activities

Selected species from the TARMAC library will first be cultivated in specific enclosed conditions taking into account the environmental constraints in the collecting site. It is vital to have all parameters perfectly controlled when cultivating sensitive species in a recirculation system and achieving the optimum conditions is closely linked with being able to produce the desired amount of biomass of each target species.

Next, selected species from TARMAC library will be cultivated in outdoor conditions. According to the results obtained from WP1, the growth conditions will be optimised in scale-up devices and these improvements will guide the development of new industrial prototypes dedicated to the cultivation of mesophotic ecosystem microorganisms, which will be transferred to WP5.
